Being an Astronaut is surely fun: you can go to space, take care of your ship, and do space-related jobs. However, you suddenly have to search for a mole in your ship, kill each other, lie, and die in a small place.
You might think that it was from a horror or murder game, but it’s actually what happened in the popular game, Among Us. The game is so popular, people from all ages have tried it, spawning many memes and jokes, but we never think about how it may negatively influence its player, especially younger players. Let’s break it down in this article.
What is Among us?
Among Us, released on June 15, 2018, is a game where you were put in a group of astronauts in space, manning a ship. The catch is, one of the people on the ship is an impostor. If you’re the impostor, you have to kill everyone. If the crew managed to finish all the tasks or correctly guess the impostor, the crew side wins.
This game can be played on gaming consoles like PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox series x/s and nintendo, also mobile, and PC. The developers of Among Us are Innersloth, Playanyware, and Schell Games LLC.
It feels like playing detective, that’s why it has become so popular. However, people often don`t care about its negative effects.
Violent actions
The first negative effect is the game context itself. It has kill effects that are very brutal and graphic, like someone slapping another person then shooting him straight in the head. Is this a good thing to show to your children? This will make children addicted to violence and might do it themselves.
A game where you have to lie
Another negative effect is that it teaches children how to lie, and to be suspicious of each other. For example, In this picture, user ‘mrgood’, colored orange, is accusing user “Beeble” of chasing him and being suspicious. User ‘forte’, in white, says the opposite. This kind of lying and deceit is not good especially if we want to teach children to be honest and kind.
Exposure to curse words
Finally, playing Among Us exposes children to swearing. People don’t like to be accused, especially if they didn’t do anything wrong–it can make them defensive and angry. Therefore, in a game where accusing people is how you play, no wonder people can’t control their emotions. Players are often seen swearing, then rage quit or bully other people just because they think they’re right. This kind of environment is toxic, and children playing the game can learn this behavior as well. This can lead to children becoming violent and impolite.
Conclusion
A lot of people think Among Us is just a game with funny memes. However, the effect is still present: it teaches children violence, lying and curses. Therefore, I recommend you to be careful while playing - if you’re not the correct age, play with parental supervision or don’t play at all!
